Don't Be Afraid AnymoreDon't Be Afraid Anymore : The Story of Reverend Troy Perry and the Metropolitan Community Churches by Troy D., Rev. Perry, Thomas L. P. Swicegood (Contributor)

Today the Metropolitan Community Church--the first to minister to the needs of lesbians and gay men--boasts over 200 congregations in nine countries. But, for Troy Perry, excommunicated from the Church of God because of his homosexuality, this achievement has been marked by a struggle against adversity. Here is his inspiring story. Photographs.

"I discovered this book by accident in an Edinburgh book shop in 1993. I had no active interest in religion at that time but for some reason I felt compelled to buy it. I "devoured" the book in 24 hours and have re-read it several times since.

The book is an honest and inspiring account of Rev Perry's life and the circumstances surrounding the formation of the Metropolitan Community Church. As well as his own testimony, we are treated to the stories of many other people who have helped made MCC what it is in the 19 countries world-wide where its congregations (now over 300 in number) minister.

Two years later I helped found MCC in Edinburgh, Scotland as a result of reading this book. No other book as had such a direct impact on my day to day life.

Even if you are not religious, this book will gave you an insight on the struggles of lesbian and gay people of faith within a Christian church which has often closed its ears to Christ's message of inclusivity and hope." -- Stephen Harte (Amazon.com)

"I first read this book in 1992. I was going to school in Florence, Alabama and I drove 70 miles one-way to Huntsville, Alabama to a gay/lesbian bookstore. I read that book in one afternoon. It brought tears of joy to my eyes and my heart was deeply touched at the courage of Rev. Troy Perry He is an inspiration to all gay/lesbian people everywhere.  Words just cannot describe how I feel." -- Anonymous Review (Amazon.com)

Rev. Troy Perry

On July 11, 1999, over 3,000 people filled the roped-off streets in front of a sleek, modern complex of buildings at 8704 Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood, CA (USA). They were gathered there for the public Dedication Celebration of the UFMCC World Center...the new home of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC) and the Worship Center of its 'mother' church, MCC Los Angeles.

The major celebrant was the  Founder/Moderator of UFMCC, Rev. Elder Troy Perry, an openly gay clergyman who founded UFMCC with 12 people in his living room in Los Angeles on October 6, 1968. In the brief span of 30 years since that date, he has seen the membership of UFMCC grow, despite opposition, adversity and persecution, to 44,000+ people in over 300 congregations in 16 countries around the world...

UFMCC's Mission Statement:

"The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches is a Christian Church founded in and reaching beyond the Gay and Lesbian communities. We embody and proclaim Christian salvation and liberation, Christian inclusivity and community, and Christian social action and justice. Rev. Troy Perry’s Speech During the March Rally

This is Rev. Troy Perry’s speech during the Millennium March on Washington Rally on Sunday, April 30, 2000. Over 750,000 were in attendance to hear this and an estimated 22,000,000 people watched the March and Rally via C-SPAN and through streaming video over the internet.

Excerpt:

We've gathered today on the National Mall with incredible diversity. We've gathered here today: those ready to fight for justice, and those who are weary from the battle. I come here today as a person of faith. Many of us gathered here today are people of faith. Let me also quickly acknowledge that too many of us in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities have been hurt by organized religion.

In spite of that, many of us have found strength and hope in our spiritual faith. So we gather here today with incredible diversity: Jew and Christian, Islamic and Hindu, Pagan and Wiccan, as well as those who have rejected any faith system. And today I proclaim this message that I have preached during my 30 years of activism: Believe that God - the God of the Universe – loves you just the way you are!
