Psychopathia
Sexualis : With Especial Reference to the Antipathic Sexual
Instinct : A Medico-Forensic Study by Richard Von
Krafft-Ebing
Controversial for decades, now finally back in
print, this classic 19th-century work on so-called sexual
deviation is the pioneering collection of case studies that
cataloged and defined "perversion"--from fetishism to
incest to homosexuality and much more. Informative and
entertaining, Psychopathia
Sexualis is considered one of the most important documents
in humankind's modern efforts to understand itself.
"Preceding Freud's work over twenty years,
Krafft-Ebing's works are classic, and should be mandatory for
anyone interested in human sexuality, especially sexual deviance. Psychopathia
Sexualis is a compilation of Krafft-Ebing's casework (over
200 cases documented) involving bizarre, perverse, and sexually
confused subjects. In reading this, I found that the questions I
thought I clearly had answers to, I really did not, and that in
fact, I had more questions about human sexuality than ever before.
The cases dive deep into the personal history of each subject, and
Krafft-Ebing objectively provides physiological aspects (that you
may or may not take as explanatory factors) and the subject's
reasoning for their deviant behavior. Instead of providing direct
answers that are more likely to be declared in postmodern
literature, Krafft-Ebing presents only facts, understanding that
one single evaluation could never explain the "why's"
and the "how's" of human behavior." -- Anonymous

The Wellcome
Trust, 10 December 1998
Recently discovered records of 19th century
sexual obsessions of turn-of-the-century Austria-Hungary have been
acquired by one of the world’s leading libraries for the study
of the history of medicine, the Wellcome Institute Library. Penned
by the father of the psychology of sex, Richard von Krafft-Ebing
(1840-1902), these sometimes lurid accounts of sexually
‘deviant’ behaviour will provide an invaluable insight into
the history of psychiatry.
Richard von Krafft-Ebing, professor of psychiatry at the
University of Graz and later Vienna, was the first doctor to
conduct a systematic study of sexual deviance: Psychopathia
sexualis. The book’s explicit nature - homosexuality,
fetishes, masochism - made it notorious and ensured that its
popularity would go beyond the realm of doctors and lawyers.
Pigeon-holed as a one book wonder, the discovery of
Krafft-Ebing’s ‘treasures’ - about 1,500 case histories -
will shed new light on the work of one of psychiatry’s most
renowned figures...
