Dykes to Watch Out ForDykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel

"I first found Ms. Bechdel's work in, of all places, a science fiction bookstore. I was in the mood for cartoon books, picked up hers, and noticed that her characters had four fingers to go with their thumbs, were mostly female, had women of all races and shapes, and they were drawn in a reasonably anatomically correct manner.

Although I am not a lesbian (but am a friend of the family), I was drawn to the richness and humanity of Bechdel's characters. When I saw the drawing of one woman cowering under the bedcovers and her partner going after a stray bat (animal) with a tennis racket, I roared with laughter and took the book to the checkout line.

If you are straight and want a gentle and humorous look into lesbian life or are lesbian and just want a warm "me too" kind of chuckle, this is the book for you." -- Elaine Richards

New Improved! : Dykes to Watch Out forNew Improved! : Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel

"Appropriately enough, the cover of this installment of America's favorite Lesbian cartoon "soap-opera" depicts our heroines at... the Laundermat! Alison Bechtel's "Dykes To Watch Out For" comic strip is a long-enduring feature of Gay weekly newspapers, but it is best to read it in paperback collections. The series has been compiled into nine separate books. I recommend reading them in chronological order! The art is fantastic, but the creator pays particular attention to story continuity. Mo and her cronies grow and develop throughout the series. The characters are so real and appealing, we come to regard them as old friends whose lives we've shared. Watch out for these dykes as they get involved with community, careers, family, friends, feminism, political activism, recreation, romance, and relationships. The comedy is often laugh-out-loud hilarious, but serious subjects are treated with sensitivity. Heterosexual readers, even male readers, can identify with Bechtel's Lesbian characters and their very normal life situations." -- Chapulina R.

Bechdel, creator of the popular cartoon strip "Dykes to Watch Out For," was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania and grew up drawing cartoons. After attending Oberlin College and moving to New York City she started to include drawings of "crazy lesbians" in letters she wrote to friends. Her friends encouraged her to publish her cartoons.

"Dykes to Watch Out For" made its first appearance in Womanews, a New York feminist newspaper in 1983. The strip is now a feature in more than 45 lesbian, gay, feminist and alternative publications in four countries. "Dykes to Watch Out For" also appears in an annual calendar and the strips comprise six best-selling collections. Two of the collections have won Lambda Literary Awards.
