| Feminist
theories and
social work: Approaches and applications by
Christine Flynn Saulnier
Feminist Theories and
Social Work: Approaches and Applications counteracts the notion of
feminist theory as a single theory with multiple contradictions.
Instead, it equips you with a better understanding of the many
important branches of feminist theory and of each branch’s own
internal logic and specific applications. Each individual branch,
such as cultural, lesbian, womanist, and postmodern, is discussed
in its own chapter with practical applications for implementing
each theory of feminism. These applications are designed to cut
across several levels of practice: social welfare policy,
administration, community organizing, group work, casework, and
research. This invaluable guidebook accomplishes what many others
on feminist theory do not. It reviews both the theories and the
applications of the field. Too frequently, books and articles tend
to focus on one or two ways for practicing feminism, when, in
reality, different problems, different groups of women, and
different goals may require a different theory for guiding
objectiveness, strategies, and work style. Using the wrong theory
for a particular group or problem may backfire, causing unexpected
outcomes. This book circumvents such unforeseen results; Feminist
Theories and Social Work reviews the most important theories of
today, evaluates the contributions and limitations of each branch,
and for each theory, provides application examples at several
levels of intervention. Practitioners in social work and the
helping professions and students of social work and women’s
studies will find the familiar liberal, radical, and socialist
theories of feminism along with these contemporary theories:
global feminism ecofeminism womanist feminism cultural feminism
lesbian feminism psychoanalytic feminism postmodern feminism
Feminist Theories and Social Work thrusts these lesser-known
theories of feminism into the foreground for examination alongside
more easily recognized liberal, radical, and socialist feminism.
Under just one cover, the author thoroughly explores each branch
of feminism with a brief and accessible, yet extensive,
explanation.
Reviews
“Saulnier advances the
knowledge base substantially with her readable and comprehensive
analysis. . . . What is even more significant in terms of this
book’s relevance to social work education is that she derives
specific practice implications from each theoretical base for
policy, community organization, administration, group work, case
work, and research. . . . A unique integration of feminist theory
and practice useful to a wide range of classes in social work,
women’s studies, and other human service fields. IT IS AN
ESSENTIAL REFERENCE TO BE READ REPEATEDLY BY ALL EDUCATORS AND
PRACTITIONERS WHO ARE EAGER TO LEARN MORE ABOUT FEMINIST THEORY
AND PRACTICE.” -- Nancy R.
Hooyman, PhD, MSW, Dean and Professor, School of Social Work,
University of Washington, Seattle
“The author translates nine different
feminist theories into plain English so they become readable and
accessible. . . . The attention given throughout the book to the
integral connection between theory, research, social work issues,
and interventions to bring about change make Dr. Saulnier’s book
A MUST FOR PRACTITIONERS, ADMINISTRATORS, POLICY ANALYSTS,
RESEARCHERS, AND SOCIAL WORK FACULTY AND STUDENTS. . . . Valuable
as well for feminists in the selection of theories and actions
that are not at cross-purposes.” -- Linda Cherrey Reeser,
PhD, Professor, School of Social Work, Western Michigan
University, Kalamazoo
